Spiti Valley Travel Guide 2025 — Everything You Need to Know

20 February 2025 12 min read

Spiti Valley, often called the "Middle Land" between India and Tibet, is one of the most remote and breathtaking regions in the Indian Himalayas. Located in the northeastern part of Himachal Pradesh, this cold desert mountain valley sits at an average altitude of 12,500 feet and offers a landscape so surreal, it feels like another planet.

How to Reach Spiti Valley

There are two primary routes to reach Spiti Valley:

Route 1: Via Shimla (Year-round)

The Shimla route is accessible throughout the year. The journey takes you through Rampur Bushahr, Narkanda, and Reckong Peo before reaching Kaza, the sub-divisional headquarters of Spiti.

Distance from Shimla: ~412 km

Duration: 2 days (with overnight halt at Reckong Peo or Kalpa)

Road Condition: Mostly paved, with some stretches under construction

Route 2: Via Manali (June to October)

The Manali route is only open during summer months when the Rohtang Pass and Kunzum Pass are snow-free. This route is the more adventurous of the two.

Distance from Manali: ~200 km

Duration: 1 long day or 2 comfortable days

Road Condition: Rough, unpaved stretches — 4x4 recommended
